Many days there are far too many anniversaries, holidays, and observances to post about individually on social media, so in an effort to have more of them available, LLPHP is going to experiment with posting them daily.   • Human Rights Day

  • 1510: The Muslim ruler of Goa surrendered to Portuguese forces who slaughtered the Muslim population
  • 1869: Women in the Wyoming Territory were the first in the US to be granted the right to vote
  • 1902: Women were given the right to vote in Tasmania
  • 1907: The worst night of the Brown Dog riots in London where 1,000 medical students clashed with 400 police officers over the existence of a memorial for animals who have been vivisected
  • 1934: Fascist dictator of Latvia Ulmanis began building a concentration camp
  • 1948: The UN General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
  • 1963: Zanzibar gained independence from Great Britain
  • 1964: The Nobel Peace Prize was presented to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
  • 1978: Menachem Begin and Anwar Sadat accept the Nobel Peace Prize
  • 1984: South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu was presented with the Nobel Peace Prize
  • 1986: Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel accepted the Nobel Peace Prize
  • 1994: The Nobel Peace Prize was presented to Yitzhak Rabin, Shimon Peres, and Yasser Arafat
  • 2010: Chinese human rights activist Liu Xiaobo was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize at a ceremony in Stockholm, while imprisoned in China
