- 1648: An uprising occurred against Anna of Austria and Cardinal Mazarin
- 1745: Britain, Prussia, and Hannover signed a treaty
- 1789: The French Revolution’s National Constituent Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen
- 1874: 16 black Americans were lynched in Tennessee
- 1894: The Netherlands’ Social-Democratic Worker’s party (SDAP) formed
- 1939: Croatia received autonomous status
- 1942: 7,000 Jews were rounded up in Vichy-France
- 1974: Guinee-Bissau became independent of Portugal
- 1983: Floods destroyed most of the old town of Bilbao, Spain
- 1992: Hurricane Andrew made landfall in Louisiana as Category 3 storm after causing deaths and severe damage in Florida
- 1997: 60-100 people were killed in the Beni-Ali massacre in Algeria
- 2008: Russia unilaterally recognized the independence of the former Georgian breakaway republics Abkhazia and South Ossetia
- 2017: Hurricane Harvey was downgraded to a tropical storm, but the National Hurricane Center warned of a “multiday rainfall disaster”
- 2017: Half a million people took part in a peace march in Barcelona, Spain following terrorist attacks
- 2020: At least 100 people were killed in flash floods in Charikar, Afghanistan, with 500 houses destroyed
