Many days there are far too many anniversaries, holidays, and observances to post about individually on social media, so in an effort to have more of them available, LLPHP is going to experiment with posting them daily here. On This Day
- 1554: Eindhoven, Netherlands experienced its “Great Fire”
- 1638: A petition in Recife, Brazil led to their two synagogues being closed
- 1709: The Great Frost, Europe’s coldest ever winter on record, began. Thousands of people were killed and crops failed
- 1804: The Ohio Legislature passed the first “Black Codes”, laws to interfere with the rights of black Americans such as moving within the state, moving into the state, and finding gainful employment
- 1919: The German Workers’ Party, a precursor to the National Socialist German Workers’ (Nazi) Party was formed
- 1925: Nellie Taylor Ross became the governor of Wyoming, and became the first woman to be a governor in the US
- 1970: 23,000 Belgian mine workers went on strike
- 1974: An earthquake in Lima, Peru, killed six people and damaged hundreds of houses
- 2018: North Korea accepted a South Korean invitation for high-level talks
