On This Day

• 1660: English King Charles II issued the Declaration of Breda regarding freedom of religion
• 1887: Susanna Madora Salter became the first woman to be elected mayor in the US in Argonia, Kansas
• 1905: An earthquake killed 20,000 people in Kangra India
• 1912: The Russian Army fired on striking mine workers at Lena-gold fields in Siberia
• 1920: Arabs attacked Jews in Jerusalem
• 1930: The Communist Party of Panama was founded
• 1945: US forces liberated the Ohrdruf Concentration Camp in Germany, the first such camp to be liberated by the US Army
• 1960: Senegal declared independence from France
• 1968: US civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. In response, riots broke out in over 100 US cities
• 2002: The Angolan government and UNITA rebels signed a peace treaty ending the Angolan Civil War
• 2008: In a raid on the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints owned YFZ Ranch in Texas, 401 children and 133 women were taken into state custody
• 2019: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints pledged to roll back anti-LGBT policies, including not baptizing children of gay parents
