- 1215: King John signed the Magna Carta at Runnymede, near Windsor, England
- 1567: The Republic of Genoa expelled Jews from its whole territory
- 1834: Rioters in Safed, Palestine killed many Jews
- 1876: Tsunamis after an earthquake flooded the NE coast of Japan and killed 28,000 people
- 1896: A tsunami struck a Shinto festival on Sanriku, Japan’s beach. 27,000 people were killed and 9,000 people were injured
- 1908: The World Congress for Women’s Rights opened in Amsterdam
- 1945: The Dutch political party ANJV was established
- 1954: Great Britain’s two biggest steel factories were nationalized
- 1962: South Africa passed a bill allowing the death penalty for many crimes
- 1977: Spain held their first free elections since 1936
- 1982: The US Supreme Court ruled all children, regardless of citizenship, were entitled to a public education
- 1983: The US Supreme Court struck down state and local restrictions on abortion
- 1991: Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines experienced the second-largest volcanic eruption of the 20th century
- 1991: Le Bloc Québécois, the first federal political party in Canada to support Quebec nationalism was formed
- 2020: In a landmark decision, the US Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that gay and transgender workers cannot be discriminated against in the workplace
