• National Human Trafficking Awareness Day
• International Thank You Day
• 1693: The most powerful earthquake in Italian recorded history struck Sicily and Southern Italy with an estimated magnitude of 7.4. Tsunamis followed and devastated coastal villages on the Ionian Sea and the Straits of Messina
• 1759: The first American life insurance company was incorporated, in Philadelphia
• 1775: Francis Salvador of South Carolina became the first Jew elected to public office in America
• 1839: An earthquake hit Martinique and destroyed half of Port Royal killing 700 people
• 1897: MH Cannon (Utah) became the first woman state senator in the US
• 1961: A race riot occurred at the University of Georgia
• 1962: Huascaran Volcano in Peru erupted killing 4,000 people
• 1966: 550 people died in landslides in the mountains outside Rio de Janeiro after major rains
• 1970: The Irish Republican political party Sinn Féin split between those in favor of abstentionism (of not taking any seats won in the parliaments) and those who were against
• 1989: 140 nations agreed to ban chemical weapons, poison gas, etc
• 1990: 200,000 people demanded the return of Lithuania’s independence
• 1994: The Irish government announced the end of a 20-year broadcasting ban on the IRA
• 2013: 46 people were killed and 12 went missing after a landslide buried a village in China’s Yunnan province
• 2018: In China’s first significant #MeToo moment, Beijing’s Beihang University fired a professor for sexual misconduct
• 2021: Malaysia’s King, Al-Sultan Abdullah declared a state of emergency over COVID-19, suspending parliament and giving the government new powers
