- 1656: England and France signed a peace treaty
- 1821: In the Act of Independence of Central America, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua declared their independence from the Spanish Empire
- 1830: The First National Negro Convention began in Philadelphia
- 1935: The Nuremberg Laws deprived German Jews of citizenship and made the swastika the official symbol of Nazi Germany
- 1941: Nazis killed 800 Jewish women at Shkudvil, Lithuania
- 1943: The Concentration Camp Vaivara in Estonia opened
- 1943: The Concentration Camp Kauwen in Lithuania opened
- 1947: Typhoon Kathleen hit Japan’s Tone River, Saitama and Tokyo areas, killing at least 1,930 people and injuring 1,750 more
- 1963: A church bombing in Birmingham, Alabama, killed 4 African-American girls
- 1966: The Dutch political party (D’66) formed
- 1972: A magnitude 4.5 earthquake shook Northern Illinois
- 2018: Typhoon Mangkhut (Ompong) made landfall in Cagayan province, Philippines as a Category 5 storm and killed at least 100 people
