On This Day

  • International Stand Up to Bullying Day
  • 1570: Pius V excommunicated Queen Elizabeth I of England for heresy and persecution of English Catholics during her reign while absolving her subjects from allegiance to the crown
  • 1643: Dutch American colonists killed 120 Algonquin Native American refugees at Communipaw in what is now known as the Pavonia Massacre in the modern State of New Jersey
  • 1795: French Politician and Educator Joseph Lakanal, defined, on behalf of the French Revolution, an “educational utopia” as aiming to “put an end to inequalities of development that affected a citizen’s capacities for judgment.”
  • 1799: The first federal forestry legislation in the US authorized the purchase of timber land
  • 1799: The US Congress passed the first federal quarantine legislation
  • 1862: The Legal Tender Act of 1862 was passed by the US Congress, authorizing the United States Note (commonly known as the greenback), the first fiat paper money that was legal tender in America
  • 1863: The US Congress created the national banking system and comptroller of currency
  • 1913: The 16th Amendment to the US Constitution became law, providing the legal basis for the institution of a graduated income tax
  • 1919: Oregon became the first US State to tax gasoline (1 cent per gallon)
  • 1921: The Living Buddha, Hutuktu, was crowned King of Mongolia as the country declared independence from China
  • 1925: Diplomatic relations between Japan and the Soviet Union were established
  • 1941: In Amsterdam, a strike against persecution of the Jews was held
  • 1957: The US Supreme Court decided 6-3 that baseball was to be the only anti-trust exempt professional sport
  • 1986: Thousands of Egyptian military police rioted and destroyed 2 luxury hotels in the process
  • 1987: The US Supreme Court upheld “Affirmative Action” in a 5-4 ruling
  • 1989: The first independent blue-collar labor union formed in Communist Hungary
  • 1992: Armenian Armed Forces killed hundreds if not thousands of people, mostly civilians, in the Khojaly massacre as part of the conflict in the First Nagorno-Karabakh War
  • 1994: Israeli extremist Baruch Goldstein massacres 30 Palestinians and wounded more than 100 in Hebron
  • 1998: Switzerland’s first legal brothel opened in Zurich
  • 2014: Hundreds of pro-Russian protesters blocked the Crimean Parliament and demanded a referendum on Crimea’s independence
