- 1237: The Treaty of York was signed between King Henry III of England and King Alexander II of Scotland establishing the boundary between the two countries that remains mostly unchanged in modern times
- 1340: England and France signed a disarmament treaty
- 1555: Freedom of Religion was recognized in Augsburg
- 1789: The US Congress proposed the Bill of Rights
- 1867: Congress created the first all-black university, Howard University in Washington, DC
- 1904: Charles Follis became the first black person to play professional American football
- 1926: Henry Ford announced an 8 hour, 5-day work week
- 1926: 20 nations signed an International Slavery Convention aimed at suppressing and ending slavery
- 1933: The fifth extermination campaign was carried out against communists in Nanjing, China
- 1957: 300 US Army troops guarded 9 black kids as they returned to Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas
- 1992: Gregory Kingsley, 12, won the right to divorce his parents, live with his foster parents, and change his name to Shawn Russ
- 2002: The Vitim event, a possible bolide meteor impact, occurreed in Siberia, Russia
- 2003: A magnitude 8.0 earthquake struck just offshore of HokkaidÅ, Japan
- 2017: Marina Hierl became the first woman graduate of the US Marine Corps’ Infantry Officer Course
- 2017: 92% of Iraqi Kurds voted in favour of independence in a controversial referendum
- 2019: Australia’s Capital Territory became the first state in Australia to legalize recreational marijuana
