On This Day

  • 1267: Rabbi Moses Ben Nachman established a Jewish community in Jerusalem
  • 1614: Vincent Fettmich expelled Jews from Frankfurt-on-Main, Germany
  • 1862: The US Government levied a federal tax on tobacco
  • 1894: A wildfire destroyed the town of Hinckley, Minnesota, killing 438 people
  • 1923: A magnitude 7.9 earthquake struck Tokyo and Yokohama, Japan, killing 142,000 people
  • 1924: Kenchoji Rinzai Temple in Kamakur, Japan was heavily damaged by an earthquake
  • 1938: Benito Mussolini “canceled” the civil rights of Italian Jews
  • 1939: Adolf Hitler ordered the extermination of mentally ill people, arguing wartime “was the best time for the elimination of the incurably ill”
  • 1941: Jews living in Germany were required to wear a yellow star of David
  • 1942: A US Federal judge upheld the detention of Japanese-Americans
  • 1946: Greece voted for monarchy
  • 1954: Hurricane Carol struck Long Island and New England, killing 68 people
  • 1961: The Eritrean War of Independence officially began with the shooting of Ethiopian police by Hamid Idris Awate
  • 1962: 12,000 people died in an earthquake in western Iran
  • 1963: New Language laws going into effect in Belgium caused a riot
  • 1968: An earthquake destroyed Ferdows, Persia, killing 2000 people
  • 1975: Bangladesh banned all political parties
  • 1982: Mexico President Lopez Portillo nationalized the banks
  • 1995: New York State reinstated the death penalty
  • 2019: Hurricane Dorian made landfall on Elbow Cay, in the Abaco Islands, Northern Bahamas as a category five storm with winds of 180mph (285km/h)
  • 2020: Rare protests happened in Mongolia against moves to teach school subjects in Mandarin instead of Mongolian
