Many days there are far too many anniversaries, holidays, and observances to post about individually on social media, so in an effort to have more of them available, LLPHP is going to experiment with posting them daily here. On This Day

  • Carpe Diem Day
  • 1401: English Catholic priest William Sawtrey was convicted of heresy and later became the first Lollard martyr to be publicly burnt at the stake
  • 1616: The Roman Inquisition delivered an injunction to Galileo demanding he abandon his belief in heliocentrism, which stated the Earth and planets revolve around the Sun
  • 1773: Construction of Walnut Street Jail was approved by the state of Pennsylvania; it became the first experiment with the practice of solitary confinement in the United States
  • 1863: Abraham Lincoln signed the National Currency Act which established a single national US currency
  • 1869: The 15th Amendment to the US Constitution, guaranteeing the right to vote, was sent to the states for ratification
  • 1910: Gandhi supported the African People’s Organisations Resolution to declare the Prince of Wales’ day of arrival in South Africa a day of mourning, in protest against the South Africa Acts “disenfranchisement of Indians, Coloureds, and Africans”
  • 1912: Coal miners went on strike in Britain until a settlement was reached and the strike ended on 1st March
  • 1917: In the Russian February Revolution, Tsar Nicolas II ordered the army to quell civil unrest in Petrograd and the army mutinied
  • 1941: Strikes occurred in Utrecht and Zaandam against raids on Jews
  • 1941: Vichy-France made religious education in school mandatory
  • 1946: 2 people were killed and 10 were wounded in race rioting in Columbia, Tennessee
  • 1962: The US Supreme Court disallowed race separation on public transportation
  • 1980: Egypt and Israel exchanged ambassadors for the first time
  • 1986: The People Power Revolution against fraud and oppression came to an end in the Philippines
  • 1992: The Irish Supreme Court ruled a 14 year-old rape victim could get an abortion
  • 2004: The United States lifted a ban on travel to Libya, ending 23 year travel restrictions
  • 2005: Hosni Mubarak, President of Egypt, ordered the constitution changed to allow multi-candidate presidential elections, asking the Egyptian parliament to amend Article 76
  • 2008: Global Seed Vault opens in Svalbard, Norway, to help preserve diversity and loss from other genebanks
  • 2018: Cold weather nicknamed “the Beast from the East” hit Europe, killing 7 people and covering Pompeii in snow
  • 2018: Global Seed Vault in Svalbard, Norway, receives its 1 millionth seed on 10 year anniversary
  • 2018: A 7.5 earthquake in central Papa New Guinea killed more than 100 people
  • 2019: Catholic Cardinal George Pell was convicted of child sexual abuse in Melbourne, Australia. As treasurer at the Vatican at the time of his conviction, he was the highest-ranking church official to be convicted of such crimes
  • 2019: More than 4,500 complaints of child sexual abuse against migrant children have been received by US Health Department and the Department of Justice has received 1,300 more
  • 2019: The City of Venice, Italy introduced a day visitors tax
  • 2020: Saudi Arabia barred overseas pilgrims from accessing the religious sites of Mecca and Medina because of COVID-19 fears for the first time in living memory
  • 2021: An Amnesty International Report said that Eritrean troops might have committed crimes against humanity by killing hundreds of civilians by attacking the Ethiopian city of Aksum on 28-29 November
