On This Day

  • International Repetitive Strain Injury Awareness Day
  • 1704: Frenchman Elias Neau opened a school for blacks in New York City
  • 1704: Indians attacked Deerfield, Massachusetts, killing 40 people and kidnapping 100 others
  • 1708: A slave revolt in Newton, Long Island, New York resulted in the deaths of 11 people
  • 1794: The US Senate voided Pennsylvania’s election of Abraham Gallatin
  • 1810: The first US fire insurance joint-stock company was organized in Philadelphia
  • 1838: Robert Nelson, leader of the Patriotes, proclaimed the independence of Lower Canada (today Québec)
  • 1854: The Republican Party was formally organized in Ripon, Wisconsin
  • 1859: The Arkansas legislature required free blacks to choose either exile or slavery
  • 1878: Congress overrode US President Rutherford B. Hayes veto of the Bland-Allison Act, requiring the Treasury to buy a certain amount of silver and put it into circulation as silver dollars
  • 1909: The first National Woman’s Day was observed in the United States. It was organized by the Socialist Party of America in honor of the 1908 garment workers’ strike in New York, where women protested against poor working conditions
  • 1931: British politician Oswald Mosley founded the New Party
  • 1933: Frances Perkins was appointed Secretary of Labor and became the first woman to serve in the cabinet of a US President
  • 1933: After the Reichstag Fire Decree, the German Communist Party (KPD) was essentially outlawed, though not formally banned, after the German government blames the Communists for burning down the Reichstag building
  • 1933: Pacifist and anti-fascist writer Carl Von Ossietzky was arrested a d sent to Esterwegen-Papenburg concentration camp
  • 1942: A race riot occurred at Sojourner Truth Homes, a housing project in Detroit, Michigan
  • 1947: An anti-government uprising in Taiwan was violently put down by Chiang Kai-shek and his Kuomintang-led Republic of China government with the loss of 18,000-28,000 lives. The February 28th Massacre marked the beginning of the White Terror
  • 1973: The Suriname government of Sedney arrested 13 union leaders
  • 1974: US and Egypt re-formed diplomatic relations after 7 years
  • 1977: A dock workers strike in Rotterdam/Amsterdam came to an end
  • 1988: An anti-Armenian pogrom in Azerbaijan killed 30 people
  • 1993: A gun battle erupted near Waco, Texas at the Branch Davidian compound after the FBI attempted a raid
  • 1994: The Brady Law, imposing a waiting period to buy a hand gun in the US, went into effect
  • 1997: An earthquake in Pakistan killed 45 people
  • 1997: A law went into effect that purchasers of cigarettes in the US must prove they are over 18
  • 2001: The 6.8 Nisqually Earthquake hit the Nisqually Valley and the Seattle, Tacoma, and Olympia area of the US’ state of Washington
  • 2001: The US Environmental Protection Agency announced that it intended to proceed with implementation of tighter restrictions on sulfur content in diesel fuel; a rule opposed by many in the refining industry
  • 2012: Occupy London protesters were evicted from St Paul’s Cathedral
  • 2021: Myanmar security forces opened fire on protests around the country, killing at least 18 people, on the bloodiest day since the military coup
