On This Day

• Celebration of Life Day
• 1510: Jews were expelled from Colmar, Alsace
• 1775: Marshal Oscar von Lubomirski expelled Jews from Warsaw, Poland
• 1837: An earthquake in southern Syria killed thousands of people
• 1905: In St Petersburg, Russia, troops fired on a large workers’ demonstration that had marched to the Winter Palace with a petition for the Tsar in what came to be known as ‘Bloody Sunday’
• 1908: Katie Mulcahey was arrested for lighting a cigarette, violating the 1-day old “Sullivan Ordinance” banning women from smoking in public, and was fined $5. Appearing before the judge she stated “I’ve got as much right to smoke as you have. I never heard of this new law, and I don’t want to hear about it. No man shall dictate to me.”
• 1941: The first mass killing of Jews in Romania was carried out
• 1973: US Supreme Court legalized most abortions in the controversial Roe v Wade case
• 1979: Tens of thousands of UK public sector workers went on strike
• 1982: 75% of North America was covered by snow on this day
• 1991: A cholera epidemic began in Peru that would lead to 300,000 people becoming infected over the next 12 months
• 1994: A 5.5 magnitude earthquake struck Sumatra
• 2016: Winter storm conditions stranded 500 motorists for 24 hours about 80 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, on the Pennsylvania Turnpike
• 2017: Chile declared a State of Emergency and requested international assistance due to wildfires raging out of control
