• National Sanctity of Human Life Day aka Pro-Life Day
• 1556: The Shaanxi Earthquake, the deadliest earthquake ever recorded, killed 830,000 people in China’s Shaanxi Province
• 1812: A 7.8 earthquake shook New Madrid, Missouri
• 1833: Joseph Pease became the first Quaker to be admitted to the UK Parliament
• 1859: Hawaii’s Mauna Loa volcano began an eruption that lasted for 300 days
• 1870: Approximately 200 Piegan Blackfeet Indians (mostly women, children, and elderly men) were killed by the US Army in the Montana Territory, in the Marias Massacre
• 1907: Charles Curtis of Kansas became the first Native American US senator
• 1932: The El Salvadorian army killed 4,000 protesting farmers
• 1936: The Catholic People’s Party (KVP) of Curacao was formed
• 1961: The US Supreme Court ruled that cities and states have the right to censor films
• 1964: The 24th Amendment to the US Constitution was ratified, barring poll taxes in federal elections
• 1973: The Helgafell Volcano in Iceland erupted for first time in 7,000 years
• 1973: US President Richard Nixon announced an accord had been reached to end the Vietnam War
• 1989: Hundreds of people were feared dead after a powerful earthquake struck Tajikistan
• 2001: The Chinese Communist Party staged a self-immolation in Tiananmen Square to frame Falun Gong and justify escalating their persecution
• 2016: A Category 5 blizzard delivered record amounts of snow to the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern US, killing 55 people and causing massive economic losses
• 2017: Thunderstorms and tornadoes in Georgia and Mississippi left at least 18 people dead
