On This Day
- 1494: Spain and Portugal sign the Treaty of Tordesillas which divided the new world along a meridian 370 leagues west of the Cape Verde islands, off the west coast of Africa
- 1546: England signed the Peace of Andres with Scotland and Ireland
- 1665: During The Great Plague of London, Samuel Pepys wrote in his diary of houses marked with a red cross in London’s Drury Lane, meaning somebody inside was infected with the plague and had to be locked in for 40 days or until death
- 1692: An earthquake in Porte Royale, Jamaica killed 3,000 people
- 1839: The Hawaiian Declaration of Rights was signed
- 1862: The United States and Britain agreed to suppress the slave trade
- 1929: Vatican City became a sovereign state
- 1946: The US Supreme Court banned discrimination in interstate travel
- 1965: The US Supreme Court decided Griswold v. Connecticut which effectively legalized contraception by married couples
