On This Day

  • Banned Books Day
  • National Voter Registration Day
  • 1499: Switzerland became an independent state
  • 1692: The final hangings for witchcraft (8) took place in the US. Overall, 19 people were hanged and six others were killed during Salem witch trials
  • 1868: Race riots occurred in New Orleans, Louisiana
  • 1905: Race riots resulting in 12 deaths occurred in Atlanta, Georgia
  • 1906: Race riots took place in Atlanta Georgia, resulting in 21 deaths
  • 1906: In New Zealand, Domestic workers called for a 68-hour working week
  • 1908: Bulgaria declared independence from the Ottoman Empire (Turkey)
  • 1919: A steel strike began in the US that would last 4 months
  • 1937: A forest fire killed 14 people and injured 50 more in Cody, Wyoming
  • 1955: Hurricane Janet formed. Over about the next week, it would kill 500 people in the Caribbean
  • 1960: Mali (formerly French Sudan) declared independence from France
  • 1981: Sandra Day O’Connor became the first woman appointed to the US Supreme Court
  • 1986: 35 countries signed a disarmament accord in Stockholm
  • 2020: America’s COVID-19 death toll passed 200,000, more than any other country
