On This Day
- 1865: The US Congress passed the 13th Amendment, abolishing slavery in America
- 1876: The US ordered all Native Americans to move onto Reservations
- 1906: The strongest instrumentally recorded earthquake up to that time, a magnitude 8.6 quake, hit Colombia
- 1941: Anti-German demonstrations were held in Haarlem, Netherlands
- 1953: Hurricane-like winds caused flooding in the Netherlands drowning 1,835 people
- 1968: Nauru (formerly Pleasant Island) declared independence from Australia
- 2017: The Romanian government passed an emergency decree to release prisoners and decriminalise corruption charges, triggering huge protests in Bucharest
- 2019: Catholic leaders in Texas named 286 priests and others accused of sexually abusing children, dating back to 1940
- 2021: Widespread protests in Russia against the detention of opposition leader Alexei Navalny and the government took place with 5,000 people getting arrested
