- V-J Day
- 1385: The Portuguese defeated Castilians at Aljubarrota, retaining their independence
- 1790: Sweden and Russia signed the Peace of Verela
- 1846: Henry David Thoreau was jailed for refusing to pay taxes
- 1885: The British Criminal Law Amendment Act raised the age of consent from 13 to 16 to help protect against child prostitution
- 1908: A race riot occurred in Springfield, Illinois
- 1945: Japan surrendered unconditionally to end WW II
- 1947: Pakistan gained independence from Great Britain
- 1969: Irish nationalists held protests throughout Northern Ireland and some of these became violent. In response, the British Army deployed on the streets of Northern Ireland, marking the beginning of Operation Banner
- 1971: Bahrain proclaimed independence after 110 years of British rule
- 1971: The British began internment without trial in Northern Ireland
- 1974: Congress authorized US citizens to own gold once again
- 2013: 638 people were killed in violent clashes between police and protesters across Egypt
- 2017: According to the World Health Organisation, Cholera has infected more than 500,000 people in Yemen and killed over 2,000
- 2017: Mudslides and flooding in Freetown, Sierra Leone killed over 500 people and left 600 people missing
- 2018: A Pennsylvania grand jury alleged 300 “predator priests” had abused over 1000 children over 30 years and that Catholic leaders had covered it
