On This Day

  • 1497: Jews were expelled from Graz, Styria, Austria
  • 1639: Virginia was the first American colony to order the destruction of surplus crops (tobacco)
  • 1773: Slaves in Massachusetts petitioned the legislature for freedom
  • 1839: A major two day storm off the Irish and English coast was immortalized as the “Big Wind”
  • 1940: Germans committed a mass execution of Poles in the city of Poznań, Warthegau
  • 1941: US President Franklin D Roosevelt made his “Four Freedoms” speech (freedom of speech and worship; freedom from want and fear) during his State of Union address
  • 1951: Hundreds of South Korean communist sympathizers were slaughtered during the Ganghwa Massacre
  • 1956: A US Federal Court barred former Little League Commissioner Carl Stotz from forming a rival group
  • 2021: More than 50 pro-democracy activists were rounded up and arrested in Hong Kong
