- International Day for Achievers
- International Day for the Right to the Truth Concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims
- World Tuberculosis Day
- 1664: Roger Williams was granted a charter to colonize Rhode Island
- 1765: Britain enacted the Quartering Act, which required colonists to provide temporary housing to British soldiers
- 1837: Canada gave its black citizens the right to vote
- 1853: The anti-slavery newspaper “The Provincial Freeman” was first published in Windsor, Ontario. It was edited by Samuel Ringgold Ward and Mary Ann Shadd Cary, who was the first black woman publisher in North America
- 1934: The US Congress passed the Tydings-McDuffie Act, declaring the Philippines independent after a period of 10 years
- 1942: The US government began moving native-born citizens with Japanese ancestry into detention centers under Executive Order 9066, fearing espionage, sabotage, etc.
- 1944: Nazis occupying Rome executed 335 civilians in retaliation for the previous day’s Via Rassela bombing that killed 33 Germans
- 1947: Congress proposed a 2-term limitation on the presidency
- 1952: Large demonstrations against apartheid were held in South Africa
- 1955: British Army patrols withdrew from Belfast after 20 years
- 1966: The US Selective Service announced college deferments based on performance
- 1967: The University of Michigan held its first “Teach-in” after the bombing of North Vietnam
- 1972: Great Britain imposed direct rule over Northern Ireland
- 1981: Colombia dropped diplomatic relations with Cuba
- 1990: Indian troops left Sri Lanka
- 1997: The Australian Parliament overturned the world’s first and only euthanasia law
- 1998: A tornado swept through Dantan, India killing 250 people and injuring 3000 more
- 2006: Long-term protests in Belarus were broken by police
- 2007: The Australian Labor Party was reinstated after the New South Wales state elections
- 2008: Bhutan officially became a democracy, with its first ever general election
- 2014: Ukraine withdrew its forces from the Crimea
- 2016: Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadžić was found guilty of genocide during the 1995 Srebrenica massacre and was sentenced to 40 years
- 2018: Tens of thousands of protestors, mostly teenagers, attended the ‘March for Our Lives’ rallies held in Washington, DC and around the world to protest gun violence
- 2018: Hundreds of protesters shut down a special meeting at Sacramento City Hall investigating the police shooting of Stephon Clark
- 2020: Indian PM Narendra Modi ordered a 21 day lockdown for the world’s second most populous country of 1.3 billion people to deal with COVID-19
- 2020: Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzō Abe announced the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games until the summer of 2021 because of the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic
