On This Day
- 1386: The Treaty of Windsor between Portugal and England formed the oldest diplomatic alliance in the world still in force
- 1460: Witch burnings were held in the Courtyard of the Episcopal palace in Atrecht (akak Arras)
- 1726: Three men arrested during a February raid on Mother Clap’s molly-house, a coffee house catering to gay men, in London were executed by hanging at Tyburn, England
- 1768: John Hancock paid duties on 25 pipes of wine, only one fourth of his ship’s carrying capacity. British officials accused him of unloading the rest during the night to avoid paying duties on the entire cargo.
- 1788: The British Parliament accepted the abolition of the slave trade
- 1916: A disastrous wind-blown fire in Ellendale, North Dakota destroyed three blocks of businesses, a church, and 21 homes
- 1933: Spanish anarchists called for a general strike
- 1945: Czechoslovakia was liberated from Nazi occupation
- 1956: An agreement regarding war reparations and was signed between the Philippines and Japan allowing the normalization of diplomatic relations
- 1960: The US became the first country to legalize the birth control pill
- 1974: The US House of Representatives Judiciary Committee began formal hearings on the impeachment of President Nixon
- 1977: Hotel Poland in Amsterdam was destroyed by fire and 33 people were killed
- 1979: Iranian-Jewish businessman Habib Elghanian became the first Jew executed by the new Islamic government, prompting the mass exodus of the once 100,000-strong Jewish community of Iran
- 1989: Journalists petitioned the Chinese government for freedom of press
- 1993: A landslide in Nambija, Ecuador, killed 300 people
- 1993: Paraguay held its first presidential and parliamentary elections in 50 years
- 1995: Kinshasa, Zaire was placed under quarantine after an outbreak of the Ebola virus
- 1997: US President Bill Clinton appointed former prisoner of war and US Congressman Douglas “Pete” Peterson to be the first US ambassador to Vietnam since 1975
- 2001: The Accra Sports Stadium Disaster took place, in which 129 Ghanaian football fans died in a stampede caused by the police firing teargas following debris being thrown onto the pitch by upset fans after a close, crucial match between arch-rivals Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko
- 2016: Rodrigo Duterte won the Philippine presidential election after promising a war on the drug trade and to kill criminals
- 2017: Jakarta’s Christian governor Ahok was jailed for 2 years for blasphemy for degrading, insulting, and lying about the meaning of the Quran, after deceptively edited video from a speech went viral
- 2018: A dam burst near Solai, Kenya after heavy rains, killing at least 41 people
- 2018: Nicaraguan anti-government protests involving tens of thousands took place in Managua and Matagalpa y Chinandega
- 2019: Pope Francis introduced new rules on reporting sexual abuse in the Catholic Church though the rules were criticized for not going far enough
