- World Oceans Day
- 1783: Laki volcano in southern Iceland began an 8-month eruption which killed 10,000 people and caused widespread famines throughout Asia and Europe
- 1953: A cluster of 6 tornadoes touched down in Flint, Michigan which killed 113 people
- 1953: Segregated lunch counters in Washington, DC were forbidden by the US Supreme Court
- 1966: Topeka, Kansas was devastated by a tornado. It was the first to exceed US$100 million in damages. Sixteen people were killed, hundreds more were injured, and thousands of homes were damaged or destroyed.
- 1984: Homosexuality was declared legal in the state of New South Wales, Australia
- 1994: A 7.8 earthquake struck North Bolivia
