Many days there are far too many anniversaries, holidays, and observances to post about individually on social media, so in an effort to have more of them available, LLPHP is going to experiment with posting them daily here. On This Day

  • National Vision Board Day
  • 1297: Monaco gained its independence
  • 1598: Jews were expelled from Genoa, Italy
  • 1867: African American men were granted the right to vote in Washington, DC despite President Andrew Johnson’s veto
  • 1906: A landslide in Haverstraw, New York, caused by the excavation of clay along the Hudson River, killed 20 people
  • 1912: Chiefs, representatives of people’s and church organizations, and other prominent individuals formed the African National Congress and declared its aim to bring all Africans together as one people to defend their rights and freedoms
  • 1982: AT&T agreed to divest itself of 22 Bell System companies
  • 1996: A blizzard buried the eastern US causing at least 50 deaths
  • 1999: A tree planting protest against the privatization of Karura Forest was attacked in Kenya prompting outrage
  • 2006: A magnitude 6.9 earthquake just off the Greek island of Kythira hit much of the country and was felt throughout the entire eastern Mediterranean Sea
  • 2008: New Jersey officially apologized for slavery, becoming the first Northern state to do so
  • 2009: A 6.2 earthquake hit Costa Rica´s Volcan Poás region
  • 2013: 130 wildfires across Australia’s east coast forced thousands to evacuate their homes
  • 2018: The self-declared republic of Somaliland passed its first ever law against rape
  • 2021: Japan’s Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga declared a state of emergency for Tokyo and surrounding areas after COVID-19 cases surged to their highest level
  • 2021: Storm Filomena hit Spain with 20 inches (50cm) of snow falling on Madrid, resulting in four people’s deaths and leaving thousands stranded
