On This Day

• National Cut Your Energy Costs Day
• 1776: Thomas Paine publishes his pamphlet, “Common Sense”, advocating American independence
• 1878: The US Senate proposed female suffrage
• 1889: Ivory Coast was declared a French protectorate
• 1917: Suffragettes known as the “Silent Sentinels”, led by Alice Paul and the National Woman’s Party, first protested outside The White House
• 1941: Seyss-Inquart began the registration of Jews
• 1947: The British stopped the ships Independence and In-Gathering from landing in Israel
• 1962: Eruptions on Mount Huascaran in Peru destroyed 7 villages and killed 3,500 people
• 1966: India and Pakistan signed the Tashkent Declaration peace accord
• 1966: The Georgia House of Representatives voted to deny Julian Bond his seat as a result of his opposition to the Vietnam War
• 1967: Edward W. Brooke (R-MA), took his seat as the first African American popularly elected to the US Senate
• 1990: China lifted the state of martial law imposed after 1989’s Tiananmen Square Massacre
• 1991: Japan ended the practice of routine fingerprinting of all adult ethnic Koreans
• 1994: Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan agreed to abolish trade tariffs
• 2005: A major mudslide in La Conchita, California, killed 10 people, injured many more, and closed Highway 101 for 10 days
