- Good Samaritan Involvement Day
- 1656: Jews were denied the right to build a synagogue in New Amsterdam
- 1888: The Great Blizzard of 1888 raged across the East Coast of the US and Canada
- 1900: The length of the working day for women and children was limited by law to 11 hours in France
- 1911: The Colonial-Born and Settlers Indian Association was formed in Durban, South Africa, to fight the infamous poll tax
- 1913: The Kansas Legislature approved the censorship of motion pictures
- 1921: Mongolia (formerly Outer Mongolia) declared independence from China
- 1943: Nazis liquidated the Jewish ghetto in Kraków, while Oskar Schindler with advance information, saved his workers by keeping them in his factory overnight
- 1961: A landslide in the Soviet Union killed 145 people
- 1963: Indonesia and Netherlands reinstated diplomatic relations
- 1970: San Francisco city employees began a 4-day strike
- 1992: The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) said companies can own 30 AM and 30 FM stations, up from 12
- 1992: A 6.8 earthquake killed over 500 people in Erzincan, in Eastern Turkey
- 1993: A major blizzard hit the Northeastern US
- 2015: Cyclone Pam caused widespread damage in Vanuatu and the South Pacific, including the deaths of about 16 people
- 2019: California Governor Gavin Newsom ordered an indefinite moratorium on the death sentence in the state because it discriminates against marginalized communities
- 2020: US President Donald Trump declared a national emergency, freeing up $50 billion to fight COVID-19
- 2020: African American Breonna Taylor was shot and killed by police executing a no-knock warrant at her apartment in Louisville, Kentucky
