On This Day

  • World Day Against Cyber Censorship
  • 1350: The City of Orvieto, in modern Italy, said Jewish and Christian mixed-religion couples would be beheaded and burned
  • 1496: Jews were expelled from Syria
  • 1868: The US Congress abolished the manufacturer’s tax
  • 1905: Continuing strikes and disorder unsettling Italy forced out Premier Giovanni Giolitti, but he will return in March, 1906
  • 1906: Heavy storms ravaged the Dutch West coast
  • 1926: Denmark began unilateral disarmament
  • 1928: In California, the St. Francis Dam failed, killing over 600 people
  • 1930: Mohandas Gandhi began a 200 mile (300km) march protesting the British imposed salt tax
  • 1935: Britain established a 30 mph speed limit for towns and villages
  • 1945: New York became the first state to prohibit employment discrimination by race or creed
  • 1968: Mauritius gained independence from Britain
  • 1970: The US lowered the voting age from 21 to 18
  • 1971: Thousands of Belfast shipyard workers marched demanding Internment for members of the Irish Republican Army
  • 1977: Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet banned the Christian-Democratic Party
  • 1994: The Church of England ordained its first ever 33 female priests
  • 2011: A reactor at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant melted and exploded, releasing radioactivity into the atmosphere a day after a major earthquake struck the area
  • 2020: British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the UK is facing the “worst public health crisis for a generation” and that up to 10,000 people may already be infected with COVID-19
  • 2021: Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi imposed new COVID restrictions warning of a new wave as cases again exceeded 25,000 a day
