On This Day

• 418: Jews were excluded from public office in the Roman Empire
• 1862: Great Britain and France recognised the independence of Zanzibar
• 1902: An earthquake destroyed the Turkish city of Tochangri
• 1910: The Republic of China officially abolished slavery
• 1931: Oswald Mosley left the British Labour Party and founded the “New Party”
• 1933: A 6.4 earthquake in Long Beach, California killed 120 people and destroyed dozens of buildings
• 1933: Nevada became the first US state to regulate narcotics
• 1939: 17 villages were damaged by hailstones in Hyderabad, India
• 1945: Japan granted occupied Vietnam independence
• 1945: Nighttime bombing by the US left Tokyo in fire causing the deaths of more than 100,000 people, mostly civilians
• 1956: A general strike took place in Cyprus protesting the exile of archbishop Makarios
• 1959: A Tibetan uprising occurred against the Chinese occupation force in Lhasa, Tibet
• 1971: The US Senate approved a Constitutional Amendment lowering the voting age to 18 from 21
• 1972: The first black US political convention opened in Gary, Indiana
• 2014: German Chancellor Angela Merkel warned Russia’s Vladimir Putin that making Crimea part of Russia is illegal and in violation of Ukraine’s constitution
• 2018: 16 people died after being struck by lightning at a church in Nyaruguru District, Rwanda
