- World Trauma Day
- 79: Mt. Vesuvius erupted, burying the cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum, Oplontis, and Stabiae and killing thousands of people (revised date)
- 415: Jewish autonomy in Palestine was ended by the Romans
- 1808: Political rights of Jews were suspended in the Duchy of Warsaw
- 1814: A Beer Flood occurred in London, leading to the deaths of 9 people
- 1871: US President Ulysses S. Grant suspended habeas corpus in parts of South Carolina during efforts against the Ku Klux Klan
- 1894: The Ohio State National Guard killed 3 lynchers while rescuing a black man
- 1916: Dutch women demonstrated demanding female suffrage
- 1961: In the Battle of Paris, aka Paris Massacre, the police intentionally killed pro-Algerian Independence protestors. Although 40 deaths have been officially acknowledged, estimates are as high as 300 people killed
- 1989: A 6.9 earthquake in San Francisco killed 67 people and caused the cancellation of the third game of the World Series
- 2012: Tens of thousands of people protested against austerity measures in Greece
- 2018: Canada legalized the sale of recreational cannabis
- 2018: The Australian State of Queensland decriminalized abortion
