  • 1349: Between 100 and 3,000 Jews awere killed in Black Death riots in Erfurt, Germany
  • 1788: Fire destroyed 856 buildings in New Orleans, Louisiana
  • 1788: Olaudah Equiano, aka Gustavus Vassa, a freed slave, petitioned King George III and Queen Charlotte, to free enslaved Africans
  • 1913: Flooding began in Ohio that killed 400 people over the next few days
  • 1925: Tennessee governor Austin Peay signed the “Butler Act,” making Tennessee the first state to outlaw teaching the theory of evolution, though this law would be repealed in 1967
  • 1934: Fire destroyed Hakodate Japan, killing about 1,500 people
  • 1937: In the Ponce massacre, Ponce, Puerto Rico’s police killed 19 people and wounded more than 200 at a parade commemorating the abolition of slavery in Puerto Rico as well as protesting the imprisonment of the leader of the Puerto Rican Nationalist Party
  • 1947: US President Harry Truman signed Executive Order 9835 requiring all federal employees to have “complete and unswerving loyalty to the United States”
  • 1952: A tornado outbreak began that swept through Arkansas, Tennessee, Missouri, Mississippi, Alabama, and Kentucky killing 343 people
  • 1960: Sharpeville Massacre: Police in Sharpesville, South Africa committed the Sharpesville Massacre, firing on protestors protesting “pass laws” that were a part of the apartheid system, and killing 72 of the protestors
  • 1965: Martin Luther King Jr. and thousands of supporters began the third march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama
  • 1972: The US Supreme Court ruled states cannot require 1 year of residency before citizens are allowed to vote
  • 1975: Ethiopia abolished its monarchy after 3,000 years
  • 1979: The Egyptian Parliament unanimously approved a peace treaty with Israel
  • 1985: In a bloodbath at Langa (Uitenhage) South-Africa, 19 people were killed
  • 1990: Namibia became independent of South Africa
  • 1991: A UN Security Council panel decided to lift the food embargo on Iraq
  • 2013: 24 people were killed and 100 were injured by a tornado and hail storm in southern China
  • 2013: A dispute over a bartered transaction escalated into civil unrest that resulted in 10 people being killed, 20 injured, and 4 mosques being burned to the ground in Myanmar
  • 2018: China announced greater controls over the media, including merging state-run radio and television broadcasters into a single conglomerate called “Voice of China”
  • 2019: New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced a ban on “military-style” semiautomatic weapons, 6 days after the Christchurch terrorist attack
  • 2019: Governor of Missouri Mike Parson declared a state of emergency in response to destructive flooding
