- In 303, the first official Roman edict for persecution of Christians was issued by Emperor Diocletian
- In 1510, Pope Julius II excommunicated the republic of Venice
- In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII announced the New Style (Gregorian) calendar
- In 1803, the US Supreme Court ruled a law unconstitutional for the first time in Marbury v Madison
- In 1848, King Louis-Philippe abdicated and the second French Republic was declared
- In 1855, the US Court of Claims formed for cases against the government
- In 1895, the Cuban war for independence began
- In 1908, in ‘Muller v Oregon’, the US Supreme Court upheld an Oregon law limiting the maximum hours a woman may work and denied that it curtailed ‘liberty of contract’
- In 1918, Estonia declared independence from Russia
- In 1920, a Peace Treaty recognized Estonia’s independence
- In 1981, a magnitude 6.7 earthquake hit Athens, Greece killing 16 people and destroying buildings in several nearby towns
