- 1430: Jews were expelled from Speyer, Germany
- 1762: Russia and Prussia signed the Treaty of Saint Petersburg ending the Seven Years’ War
- 1809: Citizenship was denied to Jews of Aargau Canton, Switzerland
- 1842: A city-wide fire burned for over 100 hours in Hamburg, Germany
- 1870: The British and Foreign Society for Improving the Embossed Literature of the Blind (now Royal National Institute for the Blind) adopted Braille as the best format for blind people
- 1877: Sitting Bull led his band of Lakota into Canada to avoid harassment and capture by the United States Army in the aftermath of the Battle of Little Big Horn
- 1881: Anti-Jewish rioting took place in Kyiv, Ukraine
- 1886: The Bay View Massacre occurred as militia fired upon a crowd of protesters and striking workers in Milwaukee, Wisconsin killing at least seven people
- 1917: Eugene Bullard became the first African-American military pilot, though he flew for the French Air Service
- 1920: US President Woodrow Wilson outlawed the Communist Labor Party
- 1925: Teacher John T Scopes was arrested for teaching the theory of evolution
- 1945: Mauthausen Concentration camp was liberated by US forces
- 1945: An uprising against occupying SS troops took place in Prague
- 1945: The Netherlands and Denmark were liberated from Nazi control with Premier Gerbrandy on Radio Orange telling the Dutch they were liberated
- 1947: Mississippi Valley flooding killed 16 people and caused $850M in damage
- 1955: West Germany was granted full sovereignty by its three occupying powers
- 1955: The Indian Parliament approved Hindu divorces
- 1964: Separatists rioted in Quebec
- 1971: A race riot took place in Brooklyn’s Brownsville section in New York City
- 1988: Eugene A. Marino was installed as the first African American archbishop
- 1991: A riot broke out in the Mt. Pleasant section of Washington, DC after Daniel Gomez, from El Salvador was shot by police
- 2012: Japan shut down its nuclear reactors leaving the country temporarily without nuclear power for the first time since 1970
- 2012: 17 people were killed and 47 people were missing after a flash flood in Nepal
- 2016: Canada’s Alberta Province declared a state of emergency as the evacuation of 80,000 people because of the Fort McMurray wildfires continued
- 2019: Violent clashes between Israel and Gaza militants over three days left 4 Israelis and 23 Palestinians dead
- 2021: A week of mass protests and demonstrations against tax reform and poverty in Colombia left 24 people dead
- 2021: The possible eviction of Palestinian families from a Jerusalem neighborhood prompted days of unrest in the city that left hundreds of people injured
