  • 1714: Rioting occurred due to a beer tax in Alkmaar, Netherlands
  • 1737: A cyclone caused 40 foot waves believed to have killed 300,000 in Calcutta, India
  • 1765: The Stamp Act Congress (First Congress of the American Colonies) convened in New York City to devise a unified protest against new British taxation
  • 1825: A forest fire disaster, the Miramichi Fire, devastated part of New Brunswick
  • 1871: A 16-hour fire injured 30 of Chicago’s 185 firefighters
  • 1879: Germany and Austrian-Hungary signed the Twofold Covenant
  • 1886: Spain abolished slavery in Cuba
  • 1938: Germany required the passports of all Jewish people to be stamped with the letter J
  • 1940: The McCollum memo proposed bringing the US into World War II by provoking the Japanese to attack the US
  • 1944: Riots occurred in Amersfoort, Utrecht, and Strugle
  • 1944: Jews burned down crematoriums in an uprising at the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp
  • 1963: Hurricane Flora hit Haiti and the Dominican Republic killing 7,190 people
  • 1990: Israel began handing out gas masks to its citizens
  • 1993: 12 people were killed during massive Muslim demonstrations in Xining, China
  • 1998: Matthew Shepard, a gay University of Wyoming student, was found tied to a fence after being savagely beaten by two men
  • 2003: California Governor Gray Davis was recalled in a special election and Arnold Schwarzenegger was elected the new governor
  • 2020: Hurricane Delta, the 25th named storm of 2020, made landfall on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula with 100-mph winds
