- 1267: Vienna’s church ordered all Jews to wear distinctive garb
- 1278: Jews in England were imprisoned on charges of coining
- 1427: Jews were expelled from Bern, Switzerland
- 1768: John Wilkes was imprisoned for writing an article for “The North Briton” severely criticizing King George III which imprisonment provoked rioting in London
- 1775: The Second Continental Congress convened in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and issued paper currency for the first time
- 1796: The French government arrested 10 utopian proto-socialists including François-Noël Babeuf on charges of plotting a revolution
- 1857: An Indian Mutiny against the British East India Company’s rule began with the revolt of the Sepoy soldiers in Meerut
- 1872: Victoria Woodhull became the first woman nominated for the US presidency by the Equal Rights Party
- 1894: The Hong Kong government declared the port was infected with the plague and the outbreak would kill 20,489 people over 29 years
- 1919: Race riots in Charleston, South Carolina left 2 African Americans dead
- 1922: Dr Ivy Williams became the first woman to be called to the English Bar
- 1925: To control demonstrations against foreigners, British troops in Shanghai fired into a crowd, leading to a boycott against British goods
- 1933: Nazis staged public book burnings in Germany
- 1937: Busmen went on strike in London
- 1940: Dutch-Indies Governor Van Starkenborch proclaimed an end to the state of siege
- 1979: The Federated States of Micronesia became self-governing
- 1989: General Manuel Noriega’s Panama government nullified the country’s elections after the opposition won 3-1
- 1993: A fire in clothing factory in Bangkok killed 145 people
- 1994: Nelson Mandela was sworn in as South Africa’s first black president
- 1995: Great Britain lifted a 23-year ban on ministerial talks with Sinn Féin
- 1995: In South Africa, 104 miners were killed in an elevator accident
- 2003: The May 2003 Tornado Outbreak Sequence began to wind down. In all, 41 people were killed and 661 were injured by 361 tornadoes
- 2012: The Red Cross suspended all humanitarian work in Pakistan after a worker was kidnapped and killed
- 2017: The United States Geological Survey (USGS) released a report saying that some glaciers in Montana had receded by 85% in the last 50 years
- 2018: R. Kelly’s songs were removed from Spotify playlists after sexual abuse allegations against him
- 2018: China announced plans for the world’s largest weather-control system, rain-inducing machines for the Tibetan Plateau
- 2021: Violence escalated between Palestinians and Israelis after Israeli officers entered the Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, rockets were fired from Gaza in response, and retaliatory airstrikes from Israel killed at least 31 people
