• 1519: Floods ravaged the Dutch/Friese coast
• 1675: Severe storms hit Western Europe causing flooding in Amsterdam
• 1903: Panama and Colombia woke up to news that insurrectionists had declared an independent Republic of Panama
• 1924: Nellie Tayloe Ross (Wyoming) and Miriam (Ma) Ferguson (Texas) became the first two women elected as governors in the US
• 1952: An earthquake struck Russia’s Kamchatka region triggering a tsunami that flooded the area and several Pacific Islands
• 1966: Flooding of the Arno River in Florence, Italy killed 113 people and destroyed countless works of art
• 1984: Nicaragua held its first free elections in 56 years
• 1989: The Alexanderplatz Demonstrations for political reforms drew over half a million people in East Berlin and was a significant precursor to the fall of the Berlin Wall
• 2016: The Paris Climate Accord Agreement went into effect
