On This Day
- Freedom of Information Day
- 1190: In the York Progrom, Jews living in York, England, were besieged in Clifford’s Tower and either were massacred or committed suicide rather than submit to baptism
- 1827: The first US newspaper owned and operated by African Americans, “Freedom’s Journal”, began in New York City
- 1869: Hiram R. Revels made the first official speech by an African American in the Senate
- 1882: The US Senate ratified the Geneva Convention of 1864, legitimatizing the International Red Cross and the American Red Cross
- 1915: The Federal Trade Commission was organized
- 1922: Egypt achieved official independence from Britain, but British troops remained
- 1941: A blizzard hit North Dakota and Minnesota killing 60 people
- 1968: American soldiers carried out the My Lai Massacre, one of the most controversial incidents of the Vietnam War, when killed about 400 unarmed Vietnamese civilians
- 1995: The Mississippi House of Representatives formally abolished slavery and ratified the 13th Amendment
- 2006: The United Nations General Assembly voted overwhelmingly to establish the UN Human Rights Council
- 2013: A €10 billion Cyprus bailout plan wiped out 10% of the citizens’ bank deposits
- 2014: Voters in Crimea voted overwhelmingly to leave Ukraine and join Russia amid international condemnation
- 2020: France ordered a national lockdown because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic
