On This Day

  • Global Handwashing Day
  • National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day
  • 1655: The Jews of Lublin were massacred
  • 1674: The Torsåker witch trials, Sweden’s largest witch trials, began, leading to 71 people being beheaded and burned
  • 1866: The Great fire of Quebec destroyed 2,500 houses
  • 1883: The US Supreme Court declared the Civil Rights Act of 1875 unconstitutional
  • 1905: Union workers the Dutch Covenant of Worker’s Union (NVV) rejected safety demands
  • 1941: The first mass deportation of German Jews to Eastern Europe took place
  • 1954: Hurricane Hazel made its first landfall in the US in North Carolina as a category 4 hurricane. In total, it would kill 195 people in the US and Canada
  • 1966: The Black Panther Party was created by Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale in Oakland, California
  • 1974: The National Guard was mobilized to restore order in Boston in relation to school busing
  • 1987: The Great Storm of 1987 hit France and England
  • 2005: Over 100 people were arrested after a riot broke out in Toledo, Ohio during a National Socialist/Neo-Nazi protest
  • 2017: 500 wildfires, fanned by winds from Hurricane Ophelia, occurred in Portugal and Northern Spain, killing at least 35 people
  • 2020: The Thai government issued an emergency decree banning public gatherings amid increasing pro-democracy protests and criticism of the king
