  • 1322: Robert the Bruce of Scotland defeated King Edward II of England, forcing Edward to accept Scotland’s independence
  • 1865: The Cheyennes and Arapahos tribes signed a “peace treaty” and were then chased out of Colorado
  • 1943: 600 Jewish prisoners mounted an uprising at the Nazi concentration camp in Sobibor, Poland allowing 300 people to successfully escape
  • 1946: The Netherlands and Indonesia signed a cease fire
  • 1958: The Malagasy Republic became an autonomous republic in the French Community
  • 1964: Martin Luther King Jr. was announced as the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize
  • 1968: A 6.8 earthquake wrecked the Australian town of Meckering, rupturing all nearby major roads and railways
  • 1969: Race riots occurred in Springfield, Massachusetts
  • 1971: 2 people were killed in Memphis, Tennessee during racial disturbances
  • 1979: The first Gay and Lesbian Civil Rights March on Washington, DC was attended by over 100,000 people
  • 1982: US President Reagan proclaimed the war on drugs
  • 1986: The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Auschwitz survivor Elie Wiesel for his efforts to ensure the Holocaust was remembered
  • 2014: The World Health Organization announced the Ebola virus total death toll had reached 4,447,and the fatality rate had reached 70%
  • 2017: The Spanish government said it would impose direct rule on Catalonia after the region voted for independence
  • 2018: Flash flooding in France’s Aude region killed at least 10 people
  • 2019: Spain’s Supreme Court jailed nine Catalan separatist leaders for sedition for holding the 2017 independence referendum, prompting violent clashes in Barcelona
  • 2019: Hundreds of forest fires broke out in western Lebanon, killing three people and prompting calls for international help
