  • 1321: 160 Jews of Chincon, France were burned at stake
  • 1598: Deed of Transfers proclaimed independence for the Netherlands
  • 1680: Pueblo Indians took possession of Santa Fé in the New Mexican Province, from Spanish
  • 1718: Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI, Turkey, and Venice signed a peace treaty
  • 1831: Former slave Nat Turner led an uprising against slavery
  • 1926: Greeks rose up against Greek president and dictator Pangalos
  • 1938: Italy barred all Jewish teachers in public schools
  • 1991: Latvia declared independence from the USSR
  • 1992: US Marshals moved in on Randy Weaver’s cabin in Ruby Ridge, Idaho to apprehend him on firearms charges starting an 11 day stand-off
  • 1994: Typhoon Fred ravaged China’s Zhejiang County killing over 700 people
  • 1997: Typhoon Winnie killed 140 people and injured 3,000 people in East China
  • 1997: The US government forced the closure of Hudson Foods due to an E Coli break out
  • 2001: The Red Cross announced that Tajikistan and Uzbekistan were experiencing a famine and called for international aid
  • 2007: Hurricane Dean made its first landfall in Costa Maya, Mexico. It was the first storm since Hurricane Andrew to make landfall as a Category 5
  • 2012: 20 people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo died from the Ebola virus
  • 2013: 21 people were killed in flash floods in Qinghai Province, China
  • 2019: 74,155 fires caused by land clearing were burning in the Amazon rain forest, the most ever recorded
  • 2019: In a landmark towards eradication of the disease, Nigeria marked three years without a case of polio
