- International Financial Independence Awareness Day
- Malaria Awareness Day/World Malaria Day
- 1541: Liege, Belgium experienced a couple days of major flooding after heavy down pours
- 1849: The Governor General of Canada, Lord Elgin, signed the Rebellion Losses Bill which compensated people for losses during the Rebellions of 1837, outraging Montreal’s English population and triggering the Montreal Riots.
- 1867: Tokyo opened for foreign trade
- 1881: 250,000 Germans petitioned to bar foreign Jews from entering Germany
- 1905: Whites won the right to vote in South Africa
- 1944: The United Negro College Fund incorporated
- 1950: Republik Maluku Selatan (also known as the Republic of the South Moluccas), a breakaway separatist republic that would only last about 13 years, was declared on Ambon
- 1967: Abortion was legalized in Colorado
- 1967: Britain granted internal self-government to Swaziland
- 1971: About 200,000 anti-Vietnam War protesters marched on Washington, DC
- 1978: The US Supreme Court ruled pension plans cannot require women to pay more
- 1985: The West German Parliament ruled it is illegal to deny the Holocaust
- 2011: At least 300 people were killed in the deadliest tornado outbreak in the Southern US since the 1974 Super Outbreak
- 2013: The United Kingdom reopened its embassy in Somalia after 22 years
- 2015: A magnitude 7.8 earthquake near Kathmandu, Nepal, killed 8000 people, left over 100,000 people homeless, and destroyed many historic sites
- 2019: Thousands of protestors marched in Khartoum, Sudan calling for civilian rule
- 2019: Cyclone Kenneth struck Mozambique killing at least 38 people and damaging nearly 35,000 homes
