On This Day

  • Native American Day
  • 1683: King Louis XIV expelled all Jews from French possessions in the Americas
  • 1706: Charles XII of Sweden and August II of Saksen signed the Treaty of Altranstädt
  • 1786: African American slave and poet Jupiter Hammon made his “Address to the Negroes of the State of New York” speech advocating emancipation at meeting of African Society in NY
  • 1829: Russia and the Ottoman Empire signed the Peace Treaty of Adrianople
  • 1838: The Anti-Corn-Law League formed to bring about the repeal of English Corn Law
  • 1883: A National black convention met in Louisville, Kentucky
  • 1890: The President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Wilford Woodruff, under pressure from the US government, issued a manifesto advising members that the teaching and practice of polygamy should be abandoned
  • 1966: Hurricane Inez formed. The storm killed 293 people in the Caribbean, Florida, and Mexico over the next week
  • 1973: Guinea-Bissau declared independence from Portugal
  • 1995: Volcano Mount Ruapehu on New Zealand’s North Island erupted
  • 2005: Hurricane Rita made landfall in the United States, devastating Beaumont, Texas and portions of southwestern Louisiana
  • 2013: 515 people were killed by a magnitude 7.7 earthquake in Balochistan, Pakistan
  • 2018: According to the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Health Ministry, to date the Ebola virus had caused 69 deaths and sickened 150 people
  • 2019: Nancy Pelosi announced a formal impeachment inquiry into US President Donald Trump, arguing that he tried to enlist a foreign power for his own political gain
  • 2019: A 5.8 magnitude earthquake in northern Pakistan killed at least 10 people and injured 300 more
  • 2019: Protests took place outside the Indonesian Parliament and throughout the country, over proposed new laws banning sex before marriage, abortion, and insulting the president
  • 2020: The media reported China was continuing to expand its Uighur detention centers, with more than 380 suspected facilities housing 1 million people in Xinjiang
