  • 1663: The town of Gemert in modern Netherlands fined unwed mothers a 50 guilder penalty
  • 1792: Etta Palm demanded women be given the right to divorce their husbands
  • 1853: Cincinnati became the first US city to employ full-time professional firefighters
  • 1863: The first wartime conscription law in the US went into effect
  • 1881: Anti-Jewish riots took place in Jerusalem
  • 1905: “SOS” was first adopted as the Morse Code distress signal (· · · – – – · · ·) by the German government
  • 1931: An earthquake devastated Managua, Nicaragua and killed 2,000 people
  • 1933: Nazi Germany began persecuting Jews by boycotting Jewish businesses
  • 1941: Nazis forbade Jews access to cafés
  • 1946: 400,000 US mine workers began a strike
  • 1946: Tsunami waves generated by an earthquake in Alaska’s Aleutian Trench struck Hilo, Hawaii
  • 1948: The Faroe Islands received autonomy from Denmark
  • 1954: An earthquake and tsunami ravaged the Aleutian Islands, killing 200 people
  • 1955: The government in Amsterdam took military action against people engaged in a bureaucratic strike

  • 1971: The United Kingdom lifted all restrictions on gold ownership

  • 1983: Anti-nuclear demonstrators linked arms in a 14-mile human chain in England
  • 1991: The US Supreme Court ruled jurors cannot be barred from serving due to race
  • 2001: The Netherlands became the first country in the world to make same-sex marriage legal
  • 2001: Former Yugoslavian President Slobodan Milošević surrendered to arrest by police special forces on charges of war crimes
  • 2002: The Netherlands legalized euthanasia, becoming the first nation in the world to do so
  • 2011: After protests against the burning of the Quran turned violent, a mob attacked a United Nations compound in Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan and killed thirteen people, including eight foreign workers
  • 2020: US President Donald Trump said the US Strategic National Stockpile was almost depleted amid widespread shortages of medical equipment to fight COVID-19
  • 2021: Seven democracy protesters convicted for unauthorized assembly in Hong Kong
