- 1528: The Treaty of Gorinchem was signed between the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V and Duke Charles of Guelders
- 1917: US suffragette Alice Paul began a 7 month jail sentence for protesting for women’s rights
- 1926: A hurricane in Cuba killed 600 people
- 1935: 400,000 demonstrators protested against fascism in Madrid
- 1935: The Anti-Fascist People’s Front formed in Brussels
- 1942: The “Durham Manifesto” issued by the Southern Conference on Race Relations called for fundamental changes in race relations in the US
- 1965: Indonesia carried out mass arrests of communists
- 1967: An all white federal jury convicted 7 in the murder of 3 civil rights workers in Meridan, Mississippi
- 1975: The US Supreme Court ruled teachers could spank their pupils after a warning
- 1988: Britain ended suspects’ right to remain silent in a crackdown on the IRA
- 1990: Antiwar protest marches began in 20 US cities protesting war with Iraq
- 1991: A major earthquake struck Uttar Kashi, India, causing about 670 people’s deaths
