• 1774: The word “Liberty” was first displayed on a flag, raised in defiance of British rule in Colonial America
• 1789: The National Assembly declared martial law in France to prevent uprisings during the French Revolution
• 1902 A five month strike by United Mine Workers in the US ended
• 1942: The US Congress passed the Revenue Act of 1942 which imposed a 5% individual income tax on those earning more than $624 a year, among other things
• 1945: Women in France were allowed to vote for the first time
• 1950 The death penalty was abolished in Belgium
• 1958 The first women joined the British House of Lords
• 1966: 116 children and 28 adults died as a coal waste heap slid and engulfed a school in Aberfan, South Wales
• 1967: Tens of thousands of Anti-Vietnam War protesters marched on the Pentagon, besieging it for two days
• 2017: The Spanish government suspended Catalonian autonomy due to the political crisis over the region’s independence push
