• Fire Prevention Day
• 1290: The last of the 16,000 Jews being expelled by King Edward I left England
• 1617: The Peace of Pavia was signed between Spain and Savoy
• 1621: Turkey and Poland signed the Peace of Chotin
• 1665: Due to the Great Plague of London, the British Parliament met at the University of Oxford rather than Westminster
• 1820: Guayaquil, Ecuador declared its freedom from Spain launching independence for all of Ecuador
• 1824: Slavery was abolished in Costa Rica
• 1900: An 8.3 magnitude earthquake shook Cape Yakataga, Alaska
• 1961: Tanganyika became independent within the British Commonwealth
• 1961: US members of the Communist Party were required to report themselves to the police
• 1961: Volcanic eruptions occurred on Tristan de Cunha in the South Atlantic
• 1962: Uganda became independent from the United Kingdom
• 1963: In the Vajont Dam disaster, a landslide created a giant wave that killed around 2,000 people in Italy’s Piave Valley
• 1963: Hurricane Flora ravaged Cuba and Haiti, killing approximately 6,000 people
• 1970: The Khmer Republic (Cambodia) declared independence
• 1973: The first general strike occurred in Luxembourg since 1942
• 1974: A race riot broke out in Boston over busing
• 1981: France ended capital punishment
• 1997: Hurricane Pauline killed 123 people in Acapulco, Mexico. During it’s whole span, it killed between 230 and 500 people
• 2019: Nearly 1 million people in northern California had their power cut by Pacific Gas and Electric to prevent wildfires
