  • Holy Monday
  • World Parkinson’s Disease Day
  • 1564: England and France signed the Peace of Troyes in which England recognized French ownership of Calais
  • 1612: Edward Wrightman was burned at the stake in Lichfield for heresy in England’s last public burning at the stake
  • 1783: American Revolutionary War hostilities formally ceased
  • 1865: Abraham Lincoln urged a spirit of generous conciliation during reconstruction
  • 1876: Sir Charles Gordon ended religious tolerance in Sudan
  • 1899: The Treaty of Paris went into effect, officially ending the Spanish-American War and Puerto Rico being ceded to the US
  • 1912: The UK Parliament introduced an Irish home rule bill, granting Ireland its own bicameral parliament and requiring a representative to be sent to the British House of Commons, but Protestants in Ulster resisted
  • 1914: Mexican President Huerta broke off diplomatic relations with the US
  • 1919: The International Labour Organization was founded
  • 1921: Iowa imposed the first state imposed cigarette tax
  • 1941: Nazis took control of the Jewish Weekly newspaper
  • 1941: Nazi occupiers in Netherlands confiscated Jewish assets
  • 1945: The US Army liberated the main camp of the Buchenwald Concentration Camp
  • 1957: Britain agreed to Singaporean self-rule
  • 1961: The trial of former Nazi SS lieutenant colonel Adolf Eichmann for war crimes in World War II began in Jerusalem
  • 1965: An outbreak of 40 tornadoes struck the US Midwest killing 272 people and injuring 5,000
  • 1968: US President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the 1968 Civil Rights Act
  • 1980: The US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission issued regulations clarifying sexual harassment as a form of sex discrimination and their authority in harassment cases
  • 1981: Race riots occurred in London’s Brixton area in response to racial discrimination by police. Over 300 people were injured, 82 were arrested, and hundreds of vehicles and buildings were damaged or destroyed
  • 1993: 450 prisoners rioted at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville, Ohio,because of grievances about prison conditions and the forced tuberculosis vaccination of Nation of Islam prisoners. The riots continued for 10 days
  • 2012: A pair of earthquakes, magnitude 8.6 and 8.2, occurred off the coast of Indonesia and caused 10 deaths and 12 injuries
  • 2013: Two women were beheaded for sorcery in Bougainville, Papua New Guinea
  • 2015: Barack Obama and Raúl Castro met in Panama, the first meeting of US and Cuban heads of state since the Cuban Revolution
  • 2019: WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange was forcibly removed by police from the Ecuadorian embassy in London and arrested on failure to appear in court charges in the US
  • 2019: Ex-Pope Benedict XVI claimed Catholic sexual abuse was caused in part by the 1960’s sexual revolution
  • 2021: Tropical cyclone Seroja made landfall in Western Australia near the town of Kalbarri killing one person
  • 2021: 20-year-old Daunte Wright was shot and killed during a traffic stop in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, by a police officer in who said she mistook her gun for a taser
