- 1768: The first Chamber of Commerce in the US formed in New York City
- 1906: Mount Vesuvius erupts and devastated towns in the Naples province, killing more than 100 people
- 1936: Tupelo, Mississippi was virtually annihilated by a tornado and 216 people died
- 1938: Anti-Jewish riots broke out in Dabrowa, Poland
- 1944: 270 inhabitants of the Greek town of Kleisoura were executed by the Germans
- 1969: Massive anti-Vietnam War demonstrations occurred in many U.S. cities
- 1933: US President Franklin D Roosevelt signed Executive Order 6102 prohibiting gold ownership by citizens
- 1992: Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori suspended the Peruvian Constitution and dissolved Congress
- 2012: International hacktivist group Anonymous hacked several Chinese bureaus in opposition to censorship
- 2016: Iceland’s Prime Minister Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson resigned after the Panama Papers leak showed a conflict of interest
- 2016: San Francisco became the first US city to mandate paid parental leave
