- International Day of Peace aka World Peace Day
- World Alzheimer’s Day
- World Gratitude Day
- 1451: Cardinal Nicholas of Cusa ordered Jews in Holland to wear a badge
- 1792: The National Convention passes a proclamation announcing the formal abolition of the French monarchy as part of the French Revolution
- 1872: James Henry Conyers of South Carolina became the first black student at the US Naval Academy
- 1885: Dutch citizens demonstrated for general voting rights
- 1904: A general strike called by the Socialist Party that spread throughout Italy ended
- 1913: Turkey and Bulgaria signed a peace treaty in Constantinople
- 1931: Britain abandoned the gold standard resulting in the pound being devalued by 20%
- 1934: A typhoon struck Honshu Island Japan, and killed 4,000 people
- 1938: The “Great Hurricane of 1938” made landfall on Long Island, New York with an estimated death toll at 500-700 people
- 1942: 116 hostages were executed by Nazis in Paris
- 1942: Transport #35 departed for Nazi Germany with French Jews aboard
- 1964: Malta became independent from the UK
- 1981: Belize (British Honduras) gained independence from the UK
- 1983: 11 people were killed in anti-Marcos political demonstrations in Manila, Philippines
- 1999: The Chi-Chi (Jiji) earthquake hit central Taiwan, killing about 2,400 people
- 2004: The Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) People’s War and the Maoist Communist Centre of India merged to form the Communist Party of India (Maoist)
