- 1895: The Treaty of Shimonoseki was signed ending the First Sino-Japanese War (1894-95)
- 1905: The US Supreme Court judged the maximum work day unconstitutional in Lochner v. New York by declaring the “right to free contract” implicit in the due process clause of the 14th Amendment of the Constitution
- 1961: 1,400 Cuban exiles landed in the Bay of Pigs, Cuba in a doomed attempt to overthrow Fidel Castro
- 2013: Same-sex marriage was legalized in New Zealand
