Happy Mother’s Day! Today is a special day to celebrate the important women in our lives. Mothers have more impact on our early lives and upbringing than anyone else, and therefore, a bigger impact on our lives than anyone else.

Today is a special Mother’s Day because it is also the anniversary of Victoria Woodhull being nominated for President of the United States. She was nominated in 1872 by the Equal Rights Party. Unfortunately, she was too young to be Constitutionally eligible for the office, and many people didn’t take her candidacy seriously.

It would take 100 years before a woman received the first electoral vote, and that honour went to Tonie Nathan, Vice Presidential Candidate of the Libertarian Party in 1972. Tonie received an electoral vote when Virginia “Faithless Elector” Roger MacBride cast his vote for her.

Though little known, both of these women, both of these mothers, set milestones in the fight for equality and empowerment for women. Every mother has an impact, but some are less recognised and appreciated than they should be.

What has your mother taught you? How has your life been influenced by women and maternal figures?

Thank you to all of the mothers out there and all those who have helped fill that role, whether as a biological mother, a stepmother, a godmother, or someone who mothered someone they had no obligation to and simply loved.

Thank you mothers, and strong women who make the world a better place for everyone, empowering and making history, no matter what the scale. Thank you for being loving and amazing. Happy Mother’s Day!
