  • 1818: The US Senate ratified the Rush-Bagot amendment providing for an unarmed US-Canada border
  • 1854: San Salvador was destroyed by an earthquake
  • 1861: US President Abraham Lincoln outlawed commerce with Confederate States as part of the US Civil War
  • 1862: Slavery was abolished in Washington, DC
  • 1862: The American Confederate Congress approved a conscription act for all white males ages 18-35
  • 1869: Ebenezer Bassett became the first African American diplomat when he began service as the Ambassador to Haiti
  • 1922: The Treaty of Rapallo between the German Republic and Soviet Union was signed, normalizing diplomatic relations with each side renouncing their territorial and financial claims against the other
  • 1924: Child labor laws were strengthened in Holland
  • 1942: The Japanese occupying army on Java implemented film censorship
  • 1945: The Dutch town of Arnhem, site of failed Operation Market Garden, was freed by British and Canadian forces
  • 1945: Colditz Castle, the high-security prisoner of war camp in Germany, was liberated by American troops
  • 1948: The Organization for European Economic Cooperation (EEC) was formed in Paris
  • 1956: The first solar powered radios went on sale
  • 1962: Brazil nationalized US businesses
  • 1966: Rhodesian Prime Minister Ian Smith broke off diplomatic relations with Britain
  • 1987: The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) imposed a broader definition of indecency over the airwaves
  • 1993: The jury reached verdicts in the federal case against the Los Angeles police officers who beat Rodney King, but the verdict is not read until April 17th. Two officers were convicted, and two were acquitted.
  • 2013: 37 people were killed by a 7.8 earthquake in Khash country, Iran
  • 2020: A new study published in the journal “Science”claimed a multi-decade megadrought was already under way in the western US
  • 2020: A Nationwide State of Emergency was declared in Japan until 6 May due to the worsening COVID-19 outbreak
